How do business credit cards work?

A business credit card is a revolving line of credit for company expenses. Each purchase borrows against your limit, and you repay it on a monthly statement. Pay the full balance by the due date and you won’t owe interest. Carry a balance and the card’s APR applies to what’s left.

Most issuers check your personal credit when you apply and ask you to sign a personal guarantee, even if your business is an LLC or corporation. Over time, cards that report to business bureaus help your company build its own credit file, which can make it easier to qualify for larger loans later.

Types of business credit cards

Cash back

Earn a percentage back on purchases, either a flat rate or bonus categories like ads, shipping or fuel.

Travel rewards

Points or miles for flights and hotels, often with no foreign transaction fees and travel protections.

0% intro APR

No interest on purchases or balance transfers for an intro period, useful for spreading out a large expense.

Secured & credit-building

Backed by a cash deposit. A practical first card for new businesses or owners rebuilding credit.

How to choose the right card for your business

Match rewards to where you spend

Pull last quarter’s statements. If most spend goes to ads and software, a category card will beat a flat-rate one.

Decide if you’ll carry a balance

If you will, the APR and intro period matter more than rewards. If you pay in full, focus on rewards and perks.

Do the math on the annual fee

A $95 fee pays off if the card earns you at least $95 more per year than a no-fee option.

Check employee card controls

Look for free employee cards, per-card limits and exports to your accounting software.

Know the credit you’ll need

Most rewards cards want good to excellent personal credit (670+). Secured cards are open to fair or limited credit.

Business credit card vs. business loan

Cards work well for day-to-day spending. For a large, one-time need like a second location or a big inventory order, a loan or line of credit usually costs less.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a business credit card as a sole proprietor?

Yes. Most issuers accept sole proprietors and freelancers. You can usually apply with your Social Security number instead of an EIN.

Does a business credit card affect my personal credit?

The application usually triggers a hard inquiry on your personal credit. Some issuers also report activity to personal bureaus, especially missed payments.

How many business credit cards should I have?

Many owners do well with two: one for everyday rewards and one with a 0% intro APR or travel perks. More cards add limit but also more statements to track.

What credit score do I need?

Rewards cards typically look for 670 or higher. Secured business cards are available with lower scores or no business credit history.

Can I use a business card for personal purchases?

You shouldn’t. Mixing expenses complicates bookkeeping and taxes, and many card agreements prohibit it.
